A Lifemark® rated homestay in Geraldine

A Lifemark® rated homestay in Geraldine

A new high-quality homestay in the popular Canterbury town of Geraldine, has been designed to meet Lifemark® 4-Star certification by resident owners Anne Griffiths and Rhys Taylor

Their Geraldine Downs home, on a six-hectare rural section with mountain views to the West, has been built in two phases – first a one bedroomed unit for themselves in 2008 and in 2021 a new ‘wing’ with guest room and ensuite, deck and covered courtyard, plus study and kitchen.

The design of the home uses passive solar thermal design principles, and is sunny, brightly painted and luxuriously finished, overlooking an established garden and orchard as well as The Four Peaks hills. A 600 book and 100 DVD film library, plus Wi-Fi, add to the guest facilities. The design of the home uses passive solar thermal design principles.

“After Anne’s recent experience of hip replacement surgery, we realised how important accessibility was in both interiors and outside pathway design. Our brief to Christchurch based Roger Buck Architecture was to ensure the layout and design of our B&B visitor accommodation was Universally Designed, accessible and could be usable by a wide range of abilities, particularly with older ages in mind.”

“Just because you are less mobile, for example, doesn’t stop you being appreciative of garden views, bird song and flower scents which are rarely available from large hotels or motels on main roads."

“We have an orchard and vegetable gardens, chickens, and bees here, so sharing home produce is part of our attraction. Lifemark® certification was part of demonstrating that we care about visitors’ quality of experience.”
